NJ eyes Constitutional amendment on Internet bets

TRENTON, N.J. - March 12, 2012

But a key question is whether the state's constitution will have to be amended in order to do it.

A state Assembly committee will discuss Monday whether to put the question to the voters in the November general election, or whether New Jersey can move forward without it.

The state constitution requires that all casino gambling take place in Atlantic City. Supporters of Internet betting take the position that since the online servers that accept the bets are located in Atlantic City, that meets the requirements of the law.

Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a bill last year that would have made New Jersey the first state in the nation to approve Internet betting.
