$3,000 reward offered for bicycle bandit

PHILADELPHIA - August 18, 2012

The attacks happened on the border between Queen Village and South Philadelphia.

The bike riding mugger has been caught on surveillance video, but police have not been able to identify him yet.

The first attack happened Sunday, June 17th around 7:30 a.m. in the 600 block of Catherine Street. A woman was jumped from behind, choked and robbed.

The second incident took place the following morning, June 8th, shortly before 6:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Christian Street.

In that attack, the victim was choked so hard, she passed out. She woke up to find her purse, iPhone and cash missing.

"The community is really upset and outraged. They have a town watch down there. Everybody is aware of what's going on, and they want to get this guy off the street," said John Apeldorn.

The community groups have put together a $3,000 reward to help solve this case.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Citizens Crime Commission at 215-546-TIPS. Calls are anonymous.

Police describe the suspect as an African American male in his 20s, around 5'9" to 6 feet tall, light to medium complexion, wearing a light t-shirt.

One of the victims saw him riding an older model black pedal bike.
