Pharmacist shot in Society Hill after chasing robber

SOCIETY HILL - April 30, 2013

The shooting occurred on Lawrence Court and Pine Street shortly after 10:00 p.m. Monday.

Police say the 34-year-old victim had just left work at the CVS Pharmacy in Headhouse Square when two men approached him and stole his iPhone.

Surveillance video obtained by Action News from the 400 block of Pine Street shows the suspect fleeing the scene with the victim in pursuit.

Moments later, out of the camera's view, the suspect then shoots the victim in the shoulder on Lawrence Court.

The gunman then took off running toward Spruce Street.

The victim was first assisted by Society Hill resident David Harwitz who came to his aid and kept pressure on the victim's gunshot wound.

"I was concerned for him, mainly just trying to pay attention to him and reassure him that he was okay. He was moving air, he was talking. Obviously, he was very uncomfortable, but he was extraordinarily poised and brave under the circumstances," Harwitz said.

The victim was then rushed by police to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for care. He is listed in critical but stable condition.

The suspected attacker remains on the loose.

Neighbors are now discussing next steps when it comes to the safety of the area and if more surveillance cameras should be installed.

"The neighbors are going to be putting together a meeting for later this week, to talk about what our plans are, talk about our strategy for enhancing safety of neighborhood," Harwitz said.
