Man charged in 4-alarm apartment fire in Levittown

LEVITTOWN, Pa. - October 21, 2013

Police say 59-year-old Hugh McKavanagh left his mentally disabled 15-year-old son home with smoking items not extinguished.

According to police, when the teen went to dispose of the smoking materials, it ignited the fire.

McKavanagh faces charges of engendering the welfare of a child.

He was arraigned and held on $15,000 bail.

The cause of the fire was deemed accidental.

The 4-alarm blaze tore through the Racquet Club Apartments on July 26th.

Action News reported back then that Hugh McKavanagh received 2nd and 3rd degree burns trying to get to his 15-year-old son.

More than 150 firefighters from Bucks County and New Jersey responded.

The Red Cross assisted more than 80 people who lost their homes and possessions.
