Former Devon Prep teacher charged in child pornography case

LANCASTER, Pa. - April 23, 2014

60-year-old Joseph Fortunato, a former teacher at Devon Preparatory School in Devon, Pa., and 44-year-old Hector Colon-Plaza were charged with multiple counts of possession of child pornography, distribution of child pornography, and related offenses.

According to the criminal complaint, agents were conducting an undercover investigation into the online sharing, downloading and distribution of child pornography.

In both cases, the agents identified computers, through IP addresses, on a peer-to-peer network sharing several media files believed to depict child pornography.

Agents executed a search of Colon-Plaza's home and seized two laptop computers

Officials say a preliminary review of the devices revealed image and video files depicting child pornography.

Colon-Plaza was taken into custody on April 17th.

Attorney General Kane noted that Colon-Plaza is a Megan's Law offender, which will subject him to a 25- to 50-year mandatory sentence if found guilty of the charges.

On that same day, agents executed a search of Fortunato's home and seized a desktop computer and external hard drive.

Agents from the Office of Attorney General Computer Forensics Unit conducted a preliminary analysis of those items and found both to contain suspected child pornography.

Fortunato resigned from his teaching position at Devon Prep on April 21.

He is expected to turn himself into authorities on Wednesday.

Both men reside in Lancaster, Pa.
