16 killed in suspected rebel bombing in Sri Lanka
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) - April 25, 2008 The military said the Friday evening blast took place while the
vehicle was at a bus stand in the town of Piliyandala just south of
the capital.
Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara blamed the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebels for the explosion.
Ambulances with sirens railing flooded a nearby hospital, where
off-duty doctors and nurses ran in to help the injured.
Nanayakkara said the bomb was hidden on the overhead rack above
the third row of seats behind the driver.
Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan did not respond to calls
seeking comment.
