Fire in penthouse of Washington Sq. apartments

Fire officials say permanent electrical wiring equipment in a high rise apartment building is being blamed for a fire in Center City overnight. Fire was reported at 12:52 a.m. on the top floor of the Saint James Apartments, a 45-story apartment building located at 200 West Washington Square.

The fire was extinguished by the building's sprinkler system, and officially placed under control at 1:29 a.m.

Residents of the building were evacuated to the lobby of a nearby building.
