One person dead after Cherry Hill fire

CHERRY HILL, NJ - December 25, 2009

The fire broke out just after midnight along the 2000 block of Church Road in Cherry Hill. Flames engulfed the Camden County home and firefighters got right to work trying to battle the blaze.

There were reports of people trapped inside. Upon searching the home crews found a woman in the rear kitchen. She was then transported to Kennedy Hospital in Cherry Hill where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The victim has been identified as 48-year-old Sandra Hardwick.

Officials say Hardwick was home at the time with her son, his fiance and their two children. They were able to escape the flames unharmed. Hardwick had initially made it out safely as well but returned to try to fight the fire, which had begun in her rear bedroom. When she went back in to battle fire the smoke overcame her, she made it to the kitchen area where she collapsed.

The fire was brought under control at 12:48 a.m.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
