Police investigate Northern Liberties stabbings

NORTHERN LIBERTIES - January 11, 2011

Homicide detectives were back on the scene today looking for witnesses and more evidence.

It was just before 6:00 p.m. last night when a 56-year-old homeless man was stabbed to death by another homeless man near the corner of 7th and Brown streets.

He staggered to the front stoop of a nearby house and collapsed.

Then a block away, the attacker stabbed a 31-year-old Temple Law student who was walking with his girlfriend.

The attacks have rattled the neighborhood.

"People are scared to go out the house and scared to come out and go to the store; it's just a bad scene," North Philadelphia resident Keene Coleman said.

Police believe the attacker may have somehow known the first victim. But it appears the second stabbing was a completely random act of violence.

The random nature of the second stabbing is what frightens people the most.

"I work right down the street so it can happen at any time to anyone," resident Leslie Jones said.

There's a police surveillance camera at the corner of 7th and Fairmount, the scene of the second stabbing. But, police say the video is too dark to make out the attacker's features.

He's described as a black man in a black cloth coat wearing a black knit cap.

Police have identified the dead man, but haven't been able to find relatives to notify.

The Temple student remains hospitalized in critical condition.
