Parenting Perspective: Help for teen moms

CHESTER, Pa. - May 14, 2012

Sahnefah McIntyre, a teen mom who attends Chester High School, explains, "The toughest thing for me was having to just wake up and knowing that you have to take care of someone else. Like it's not all about you anymore. It's about your baby that you have to raise."

Sahnefah was 18 when her daughter was born.

Keishirah Naylor was just 16 when she gave birth, but both teens are back in class at Chester High School and holding onto dreams of a successful future. A program for teen moms at the school, called Project Elect, is helping them stay on track.

Naylor says, "I'm trying to be a nurse after school, after I graduate."

Monica Williams can relate. When she graduated from Chester High School, she was pregnant with twins.

This month, they'll be graduating from college. And now, she's on a mission to help young Moms do what she did -- get her education and provide her children with a bright future.

Williams explains, " I know what can be done when you have drive and when you have mentors in place because I didn't do it all by myself, I had my mother, a key piece, and their dad, and also some mentors."

Williams ays there are resources out there to help teen moms, the key is connecting the moms with the help they need.

To do that, she founded the Legacy Parenting Project. On May 25, 2012, the Project is sponsoring a boot camp to help moms under the age of 21 plan for higher education, develop healthy relationships, learn financial literacy and acquire other skills.

"By the time they're ready to leave, they should have a plan in place to move forward," Williams says.

The bootcamp will run from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Airport Marriott.
