The July 5 concert will mark the first time the celebrated orchestra has played on the former military base, which is about half a mile off Manhattan's southern edge. The orchestra has long been interested in finding a permanent spot for a summer residency in the metropolitan area. President Zarin Mehta says Governors Island could be considered, but transportation and other questions would need to be resolved.
