Police on Long Island have stoked the ire of the wine-and-cheese set after arresting the owner of an East Hampton art gallery for flouting state alcohol rules.

Village police led gallery owner Ruth Vered away in handcuffs on Sunday after she refused to stop serving drinks. She was charged with selling alcohol without a liquor license.

Vered calls the treatment by the police "disgraceful." The 67-year-old told them she had been serving liquor "since before they were born." Mayor Paul Rickenbach says police were just doing their job.

Vered was throwing a Memorial Weekend bash to celebrate her latest exhibit of celebrity photographs of Madonna, Justin Timperlake, Angelina Jolie and others.

One guest called the arrest a "gross overreaction."
