Longtime jazz and blues organist Jimmy McGriff has died.

A Philadelphia native who lived in New Jersey, McGriff was known for the 1960s recordings of "I've Got a Woman" and "All About My Girl" was 72.

According to his Web site, McGriff was born in Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood and started a music career in the late 1950s.

He left the music business for a while and worked as a motorcycle policeman. But a friend, fellow organist Richard "Groove" Holmes, talked him into coming back to his music career, and the recording of "I Got A Woman" on Sue Records became one of McGriff's greatest hits.

McGriff's death on Saturday was confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday by his wife, Margaret McGriff. They lived in the Philadelphia suburb of Voorhees, N.J.
