One dead after car plunges into Schuylkill Canal

Authorities in Montgomery County are investigating what caused the driver of a car to plunge into the Schuylkill Canal early Sunday morning, killing one person inside.

Police and firefighters were called out to the banks of canal, while runs along the Schuylkill River, near the intersection of Longford Road and Port Providence Road in Upper Providence around 5:00 a.m.

Firefighters responded and divers went in after getting reports of the vehicle plunging into the water.

They found the body of one man inside of the car.

Upper Providence Police have identified the victim but are still working on notifying next of kin.

No further details have been released.
