Suspect shot in the head by police in Frankford

FRANKFORD - March 22, 2012

It was around 12:45 a.m. Thursday when the man, said to be in his 20s, went into the 711 convenience store on the 5300 block of Harbison Avenue. Police say when he announced the robbery the employee ran to the back of the store. Investigators say it appears the suspect then left the store empty-handed.

The suspect then went across the street to another convenience store, a Pantry 1 on the 5300 block of Torresdale Avenue. That's when authorities say he pulled a weapon on an employee and a patron.

The man left the Pantry 1 on foot, but responding police officers located the man running along Torresdale Avenue toward Bridge Street.

That's when police say the suspect pointed a gun at responding officers. Police opened fire and struck the suspect in the head. The unidentified suspect is now hospitalized in critical condition.

Police say after the man was shot he dropped eight bags of marijuana and a handgun.

No officers or civilians were injured in the incident.

Authorities are now speaking to witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage as the investigation continues.
