A Camden police officer shot a fleeing suspect in the pre-dawn hours Monday morning. Camden County Prosecutor Joshua M. Ottenberg reported today a more than eight-year veteran on the city police department shot 35-year-old John Silvestro, a.k.a. Alvin Redd, of the 800 block of Carl Miller Boulevard.

Silvestro was wanted in Pennsylvania for violating parole by leaving a halfway home.

The officer responded to a domestic dispute call around 3 a.m. in the area of 6th Street and Ferry Avenue. Upon arrival the officer found Silvestro nearby riding a bicycle. When Silvestro saw the officer he jumped off the bike and ran.

Silvestro allegedly ignored orders to stop, prompting the officer to open fire. The suspect was hit in an alley near the 1700 block of Mulford Street. Investigators found a handgun near where Silvestro fell.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. No word on charges filed.
